Moving the Chinese Bunkhouse The Chinese Bunkhouse is one of the oldest remaining structures on the Fraser River. It is one of 5 buildings that Nickel Bros. have moved and/or raised for the City of Richmond at the Britannia Cannery and Shipyard. The former Britannia Cannery and Shipyard has been recognized as a National Historic Site through Canada's commemorative plaque program. The Britannia Heritage Shipyard is an eight acre historic park, jointly operated by the City of Richmond and the Britannia Heritage Shipyard Society. It has nine remaining heritage buildings. ![]() The Chinese Bunkhouse (35'W X 65'L X 35'H) was built on piles and beams that over the years had rotted to the point that the building was condemned. There was as much as 2 feet difference in the level of the building, the floor looked like a roller coaster. ![]() What we were contracted by the city to do was: lift the building from it's foundation; replace beams and joists as deemed necessary; level the building and brace; move the building to a new site two blocks away; provide concrete blocks for the building to be placed on and finally lower the building onto the blocks.
